Using Social Networking in Job Hunting

Using Social Networking in Job Hunting
LinkedIn, a directory of professionals and companies, is a site used by both individuals and companies alike in connecting with people, viewing job postings, job searching, hiring qualified applicants, researching for specific company, and connecting with affiliates, whether in the alumni, industry, or a variety of other business-related groups. One of the most effective ways in boosting your chances of getting hired through LinkedIn is acquiring as many recommendations from past employers and colleagues that you could post in your account. Most professionals, who are in the job market for a very long time, prefer to use LinkedIn than any other social networking sites because it is simpler to use and is strictly professional.
Facebook is an electronic diary where you can share information about yourself; however it may be personal. In the past, Facebook was primarily used to connect with friends and people you know, as well as to reconnect with former acquaintances. Due to its popularity, it has become acceptable for many people to use it as a tool for professional and business networking, aside from its social networking side that it is famous for. The use of Facebook for job search purposes has dramatically increased over time. Young professionals are the predominant users of Facebook, not just as their daily journal, but as a job hunting tool. The success of using Facebook in job search depends largely on the careful and wise use of your connections. Another key is to be always careful and aware on the amount or kind of information you are and would be sharing.
Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service utilizing instant messaging, SMS, or a web interface. It allows you to connect even with people that you don’t know, based on common interest. Twitter is used even by employers or companies (Zappos, Rainier PR, and ATT) and various job sites in posting job openings, which in turn become useful for jobseekers. In addition, Twitter offers search engines, such as the TwitterJobSearch.com, which make it easier for jobseekers to search for jobs.
The onslaught of these innovative social networking sites has tremendously changed the terrain of job hunting. Gone are the days where you simply send e-mails to former colleagues, navigate company websites for open slots, and post your resume to various job sites in order to fatten your chance to be called for a job interview. These days, being serious in being hired also mean blasting information to Facebook, sending instant job-search updates via Twitter, and meeting new people who would help you in your job search through LinkedIn. Nonetheless, social networking alone will not assure you of a job. Persistence, self-branding, professional presentation, and other classic strategies are still necessary to ensure success in job hunting.
