The door for salary negotiation begins to open after you are offered with the job. Though it is not fun to negotiate salary, it is always a part of the job search process and is inevitable. We may feel reluctant in negotiating salary in the fear that we might kill our chance for the job. Worry not. Employers pop this question because they want to know the salary that will satisfy you. They regard you as an investment and they want and need you to stay for as long as possible.
What is the best way to negotiate salary?
- Preparation and research are the keys to a confident and productive negotiation process. Conduct advanced research on what is the market value for the position you are seeking. Remember that, the best way to negotiate is to have a good understanding about what you are supposed to make. Know the company salaries, average salaries for those with job title as yours, and the average salaries for those with your educational background. The more information you have, the more you can stand behind the number you choose.
- Listen very carefully during the interview to learn their position, options, viewpoint, or what they are prepared to offer. Don’t interrupt to ask unnecessary questions. Open-ended questions are generally better, as they encourage discussion and further exploration that will arm you with more detailed information.
- Always be honest with yourself. If you are not satisfied with what the company is offering you, ask for more. It is in both the company’s and your best interest to pick a number you will be satisfied with. However, if you know you don’t deserve more and don’t need more to be happy, ask for a bit less. Don’t be afraid to ask for a salary you deserve. Just be sure that you have the facts that will support you why you deserve what you are asking for.
- Address salary negotiation at the end of the interview. By doing this, you will be in a much better position to discuss salary because you already know exactly what your job will be and how it should be valued by the company.
- Let the company offer a number first. If you can get a salary range from the company before asking for a dollar value, you will have an idea on the most acceptable range that you can negotiate. If you bare your number first, the company will have an easier time knocking you down.
Salary negotiation skill is not a substitute for having the right qualifications and knowledge for doing a great job. It is only a part of the job search process. If you are too focused on negotiating effectively, there’s a danger that they may not know just how keen you are to join their organization. So, do not be carried away with the negotiation and assure the company just how interested you are in becoming a part of them. This will increase their interest in you, and may cause them to stop looking for other for the position.
