Tips for Writing Cover Letters

A well-written cover letter is often the best way to make your résumé stand out from the pile of applicants. It must contain detailed information on why you are qualified for the position you are applying for and recognize your pertinent skills. It should also explicate the reasons for your interest in that organization and convey knowledge of the position.
A cover letter usually accompanies the résumé you send out to different companies. It is your first means of communicating with a potential employer. Its purpose is to add a personal touch to your résumé and not a mere duplicate of it.
Writing your cover letter could be a tedious task. It is important to take your time in composing a cover letter. It is easier to write a generic cover letter; however, if you do it hastily, regardless of your qualifications, you won’t get the interview.
Following are some tips on how to craft revolutionary cover letters.
  • Refrain from using insignificant or rambling words.
  • Avoid using generic addresses (Dear Sir/Madam, To Whom it May Concern)
  • Use single font throughout the correspondence.
  • Make sure that grammar and spelling are correct.
  • Target the cover letter to the job you are applying for.
  • Keep your letter brief; one page cover letter is ideal.
  • Start your letter by pointing out on the difference you can make that no other candidate can.
  • End the letter by restating your interest in the job and how they can reach you.
